Mr. Ishu Tayal- Bombay Stock Exchange

Taking a peep at the market scenario, stocks have been the most lucrative option available to investors and hence it has also been high in the number of people interested in knowing about it. The inquisitiveness of the students regarding the various operations at stock exchange was sufficed by Mr. Ishu Tayal from Bombay Stock Exchange Limited who visited the campus on 8th of August 2011.

He gave the students a brief insight about what BSE is, what is required to trade at BSE and the options available for an investor in the present times. He shared his knowledge on various investment avenues and the degree of risk and returns associated with each. The students were educated on how they need to be cautious while investing so that they are able to minimize their risks. A very valuable piece of information was shared by Mr. Tayal, on how an investor can safeguard his portfolio from fraudulent activities of deceitful brokers and agents. He also addressed the audience on the grievance addressal process of SEBI which included common FAQ’s like late payment of cash or late issue of share certificates.

Though the session was insufficient to cover the various aspects of the share market, the students could gather some valuable inputs during this brief interaction with Mr.Tayal.

Ms. Suruchi Lodha- Hewlett Packard

Ms. Suruchi Lodha from Hewlett Packard was present amongst the students of CBS to share her experiences at Hewlett Packard where she handles the Sales and Marketing department of the company.

She enriched the gathering with her knowledge in various aspects of sales and marketing at Hewlett- Packard. The students were asked to introspect and be aware of what they want to do in coming five years and why. Being a sales head she shared the fact that sales personnel should love excitement and challenges but at same time it should be realistic, measurable and specific.

To make the class more lively and full of learning Ms. Suruchi gave the class a practical situation in which the students had just 3 minutes to formulate a strategy to achieve the target and to the surprise of the students they were successful in doing so within the stipulated time. To show how customer relationship matters in marketing she shared her experience at Surat, where she could gather market insights from the clients of competitors only through strong customer relationships. Here the point to be pondered upon is that how sincere efforts towards building customer relationships can make a difference for the company as well as the client because in the case narrated above the client had tremendous faith on the advice of the sales manager.

Many more such anecdotes followed which kept the class mesmerised with the tactics of effective sales management.

By end of session the students were very clear what is sales, how to work in sales department and how one has to apply all the tactics without being unethical to crack a deal. Her excellence can be gauged by the simple fact that students who were initially sceptical to opt for a sales job feeling that it is more of a target oriented pushing of sales in a territory work, were later convinced with the opportunities and growth perspectives explained by Ms. Lodha.

Ms. Juhi Gandhi from Capital Via.

After three months of summer internship program the students were back with new hopes, aspirations and commendable experiences in their prospective fields. All set to take up new challenges in their stride to help them in the attainment of their goals, they were looking forward to the new session. The new session commenced with many guest lectures.

On 7th August 2011, the students had a guest lecture by Ms. Juhi Gandhi, Assistant Manager, Recruitment at Capital Via Global Research Ltd., who gave the students an insight on Technical and Fundamentals analysis of the stock market. During the lecture, she explained the Business Model of Capital Via and what needs to be done in order to obtain the job of a Research Analyst or a Business Researcher. She encouraged the students to make personal vision and mission statements so that all their efforts and energy are directed towards the accomplishment of the set objectives. Through two videos shown to the gathering, Ms. Gandhi reiterated the importance of being proactive, adventurous and full of life. The prerequisite of all these qualities, as per her, is to first understand oneself and then work towards eliminating one’s shortcomings and weaknesses.

Ms. Juhi concluded the session by citing an example of the alumnus of CBS- Ms. Jyoti Lilani, who got placed with Capital Via through her sheer knowledge, confidence and ability to be prepared to take up challenges.

Commemoration of 64 Years of Independence at Core Business School

The midnight of August 15, 1947 is memorable for every Indian on earth, as it is the time, when India gained independence from the stranglehold of the mighty British. The otherwise suppressed tri-coloured flag of India was given its due respect, when it was hoisted at midnight on the Independence Day. Since then, the red-letter day is celebrated with pomp and gaiety, across the length and breadth of India.

Since the past two years Core Business School has been celebrating this day with gusto and enthusiasm. Year 2011 was no exception! On the morning of 15th Aug 2011 the whole family of CBS gathered to celebrate this prestigious day. Flag hoisting was done by Director Dr. Deepak Kaul followed by national anthem sung by the entire gathering. Then the Director addressed the students highlighting the importance of remembering this day. This was followed by a speech by the respected Dean, Mr. Sunil Chaturvedi. His speech was an eye-opener for one and all present there. It threw light on various social evils still prevailing in our country and role of education in mitigating them.

The event was initialized by a performance by a level 1 student, Mr. Shivendra Tiwari, who sung a patriotic song. Also Mr.Ankit Somani from level-2 and Ms. Richa Saxena from level-1 shared their views on the importance of this day. After this, it was time for some fun and enjoyment. A game of tug of war had been arranged by the faculty, which was played between the seniors and the juniors, with the seniors emerging victorious. An exciting treasure hunt, too, was organized by the mentors where brilliantly designed clues were provided at various junctures. One clue led to the other and there were about 10 rounds of this game. It tested the physical, mental level of the students and the team spirit portrayed by each group and the winners were the ones who struck a good scoring on each aspect. Prizes were given away to the winners as well as the runners up team. Felicitation of the fourth class employees on this occasion made everyone ponder how important their contribution is in the running of the organization. The day ended beautifully with a series of volleyball matches between two teams comprising of students as well as faculty.

This entire event had a healthy dose of fun and learning and helped bridge a gap between the seniors and juniors. What lies beneath all the colourful celebrations is the national spirit of gaiety, pride and hope for a better future. A spirit and hope that is renewed every year by Indians, on August 15.

Understanding the difference between a social entrepreneur and an entrepreneur

During the ‘Independence day’ week a seminar was conducted by the founder of Mrityunjaya Bharat trust (www.mrityunjaibharat.in), Mr. Nikhil Dave. Mrityunjaya literally means “the one who never dies, who stays alive forever” and that is the motive that this organization wishes to achieve.

This trust was started by Mr. Dave, a social entrepreneur, in the year2009 and since then the trust has been working for social causes in 14 districts of MP, they have collaborations with many NGO’s and their volunteers are working outside India as well. They are also carrying on certain long term projects like “YUVA DASHA AEWAM DISHA” which comprises of drafting a youth policy that would involve as many as 5,00,000 opinions from the entire state of Madhya Pradesh. They have been consistently working in the direction of social upliftment and have been instrumental in bringing awareness amongst the people for the same. They have also done some more programs like Round table conferences, Presentation competitions to know the opinion of the youth, teaching program’s for tribals, etc. They also have many more such projects in the pipeline.

The lecture was an eye-opener to a lot of facts and left an impact upon all present in the class. Mr Dave illustrated a case of social entrepreneurship by quoting the example of Mr. Dinbandhu Sahu from Orissa who brought a change by exploring a hidden opportunity for the wellbeing of the villagers. The consciousness that the future lies in the hands of the youth was reiterated and students were encouraged to come forth and start working towards bringing a change in the society. After the session the students were really able to differentiate between a social entrepreneur and an entrepreneur.

9th August, 2011 - Mr. Roshit Jain- Senior Principal Engineer
Mobile technology as a business Enabler

It was the welcome showers of monsoon when Mr. Roshit Jain, senior Principal Engineer from Strumsoft Inc, had a one to one interaction with the students of CBS where he encouraged the students to share their dreams and ambitions which they wanted to accomplish.

He enriched the gathering on mobile gaming, as how a basic idea of playing games on mobile phone has turned out to be a business idea and how it is beneficial for the company and end users.

He also discussed about the various dimensions in which mobile apps can assist a business/ organization to achieve greater heights. With an example of Stock Market, Mr. Jain explained how it has become very convenient for any investor to track the ups and downs of the market. He went on to even discuss the latest in banking solutions and described how todays customer has evolved in their banking habits and are experiencing a seamless banking environment.

On exploring upcoming rural market he shared his experience when he visited one of the villages where the residents lacked medical facilities. This handicap of the village was identified as a business opportunity by a youngster who through his mobile phone ordered for the medicines required by the inmates of the village and thus started earning marginal profits.

A very interesting anecdote was shared by Mr. Jain who brought to the notice of the gathering how the 1p/sec scheme was conceptualised and became an instant hit amongst the rural consumers who earlier shied away from making any calls due to the tariff plans which were expensive. People residing in rural areas then used the mobile facilities to just give missed calls and expected the receiver to call back. 1p/sec and 50p/sec schemes were well accepted by both rural and urban India and ultimately led to increased earnings of the network providers.

The session was a good insight into how business opportunities can be explored by using a regular and easily available item like mobile phone. Mobile Apps which is generally used for social networking by the youngsters can now be intelligently used to assist business houses and entrepreneurs alike.
