It is one of the three largest goatskin tanneries in the world and a world-class manufacturer of leather products. It is also India's largest exporter of leather and leather products.

The  students got to learn the manufacturing process of the leather footwear. Right from the purchase of raw material to the delivery of the finished product, it is a long process and involves huge machinery as well as man power. We came across some valuable facts about the industry which were   .  The industry imports most of the leather used as raw material from Australia and New Zealand and exports the finished products to over Thirty countries. It also undertakes corporate social responsibilities  as one of its main objectives and therefore helps poor and unprivileged girls of nearby  area earn their living by giving them training and employing them in their unit.

It was enriching to learn about the organizational structure and the way they operate at the plant. A practical exposure of how procurement of raw materials is done and the level of assistance provided in setting up such a large scale industries was something which the students were unaware of. Various queries of the students were answered and explained by the official present there.

Though it was a tiring day but the interaction with such a huge industry will definitely go a long way in understanding various concepts and theories taught during the routine classroom interactions.

4 Oct Envelope Designing Workshop

“If you want to feed someone for a day, catch a fish and give him. If you want to feed him for lifetime, train him to catch a fish”

On the 3rd day of JGW’11 CBS volunteers moved a level up in terms of enjoying the joy of sharing of a skill set rather than donating something materialistic. Around 30 nearby village children got trained to design paper bags which are aimed to reduce the use of plastic bags in the locality. And what best a group of budding managers could do with a simple looking activity – They converted it into a business model that would benefit all the stakeholders: Village children; Nearby vendors/hawkers; Project School (CBS’ initiative to teach village children) and last but not the least – Environment.

The students have done a tie up with nearby shops to supply these paper bags to be used to give various products to customers at a price lower than that of plastic bags. With this supply chain in place, 50% of the revenue generated shall be shared with the children who would help preparing these bags while the rest 50% shall be used to make Project School sustainable.

As per Mr. Vishal Kashyap (student coordinator for this initiative), “Already around 150 bags have been fixed to be sold for a pilot run. Once we get a positive feedback from the shopkeepers we shall start doing this activity every week which shall take not more than 50 man-hours to prepare 500 bags.”
