JOY OF GIVING WEEK - NOW A HABIT AT CORE BUSINESS SCHOOL

The joy of giving week commenced across the country on the 26th of September with an NGO named GOONJ which initiated this campaign. At CBS this week was inaugurated by Mrs. Tiwari from Govt. School. CBS students have actively involved themselves in this social cause of reaching out to the poor and needy. Activities done towards this noble cause have been segregated into two prominent heads like:

. Vastra Samman    . School 2 School

There were about 50 students from nearby government school who were inducted to the school 2 school programme. They are being taught English (written as well as verbal) and basics of computer by volunteers from Core Business School. Students take out 1-2 hours each evening to bring up the knowledge level of these students who are bright but lack facilities due to constraints of money

Students also have left no stone unturned towards making this Vastra Samman cause known and acceptable to the common people. Despite being caught up in exams and routine lectures the students have put up awareness stalls at some prominent colonies and neighbourhoods. People have responded very positively to this cause and Huge collection has come from each section of the society be it residential colonies, govt. offices, malls and corporate houses.

Mrs Rachna Johari from DAVV interacted with CBS students during this week and appreciated this socially sensitive move of the aspiring young managers. She was impressed how theoretical knowledge about operations and establishment of an NGO is being practised by the students at CORE. The students who accompanied Mrs. Johari from DAVV also got interested in this programme and were taking leads to start a similar socially inclined cell in their college as well.

The Joy of Giving week culminated on the 5th October with a Blood Donation Camp being organized in the campus premises. This camp was organized with the help of MY hospital.

Such activities at CBS have now become a part of student life and are no more confined to a week-long affair. Instead it goes on everyday with a small step taken by the students in this direction. NEEV - the socially inclined cell at CBS has also received support from Mrs Sunita Maheshwari (NRI) who herself is very socially active and works towards the upliftment of orphans and the needy.

Management Activities

"Bricks will be thrown at you, it depends on you what you want to build out of it; Wall or Bridge." - Mr. Barrack Obama.

Radical thinkers who agree invariably to take risk and move forward to give wings to their dreams are referred to as Entrepreneurs. Enthusiasts led the successful conduct of Management activities and captured gray matter of budding CORE entrepreneurs. Idea generation activity brought the concept of idea being born anywhere and anytime by anyone. The teams had to collect as many ideas as possible from the newspaper within 10 minutes and discuss the same on the dais, developing the discussion and team spirit amongst the students. Workshop began with e-cell faculty co-ordinator Mr. Prayas Tarani and NEN representative Mr. Himanshu Acharya enlightening about the pros and cons of entrepreneur evident from the renowned personalities from Florence Nightingale to JRD Tata and D.B. Ambani.

An Entrepreneur from every face was introduced through 50 Rs activity. Each team was given 50Rs to generate maximum revenue in 24 hours. The winner made a profit of 700 Rs and revenue of 750 Rs by developing sites for a couple of NGOs. The winning team (FALCONS) comprised of Vishal Jagetia, Jyoti Lilani, Pradeep Chhaparwal, Naresh Kasotiya, Amit Rathore, Robin Raj Yadav and Ashish Maloo. The collection of this activity went for donation. The winners received a certificate of appreciation from NEN. The sole aim of this activity was to sow seeds of Entrepreneurship in each student.

Business model presented by each team was accessed by Mr Acharya on grounds of investment, market risks and market sustainability. Ideas and models will always be criticized and discouraged but these hurdles should provide friction enough to lit and not hinder the creativity and risk taking mettle of the Entrepreneur.

Finalyst- Dhan Kuber

Team Finalyst

Stock markets all over the world are creating a new high, and same is the case with the Indian market. And with this growth the BULL rally is back. This also symbolizes how failure can be turned into success, FINALYST, the finance committee of CBS Indore, came up with an exciting competition which was not only based on finance, but also covered politics, sports, entertainment etc. The motto of this competition was to make students aware about what is happening around them, and also to acquaint them with the various parameters of returns as associated with risks.

FINALYST organized "DHAN KUBER" a chance to earn unlimited cash - an event aimed at promoting greater interest amongst the students regarding the world of finance. The quiz attracted an eager response from the CBS students with over 8 teams (a mix of Level 1 & 2 students) of four members each turning up for the event which was held on 12th October, 2010

The Winning Team

The quiz began with an elimination round - "Time Value of Money". The questions covered a broad range of topics ranging from financial current affairs to basic business jargons, also other areas of business and management, to be judged in the terms of maximum correct options in the minimum time. After a closely contested elimination phase, 6 teams made it to the second round. The Second Round - "Risk & Return" stepped the competition a level up. The round was based on a basic Risk & Return Strategy. The teams were

given the option to select the amount of risk they wanted to take and winning the same guaranteed proportional returns. Third Round, which changed the dynamics of the game played so far. This round was designed in such a way so that the opponent team gets the chance to gauge the capability and knowledge of other teams and if the selected team was unable to answer the question, the opponent team would get 50% marks of the team selected team. The event ended in an evened out situation for all the teams.

The event was a thrilling experience and was designed to give everybody a fair chance.

Indore Marathon

Indore Marathon: A normal day would start when the sun would emerge from the skies and peep through the windows to wish good morning. Then the run begins. Run for a better life, a hard battle which we endure every single day. We run to the office, to the college, to the school and or maybe someplace else, but we are on the go. The whole purpose behind the daily exercise is to keep ahead of the rat race that is a part and parcel of our lives. Whether we like it or not, we do it as it concerns us in the big picture. We tried removing the win and loss factor from the whole purpose of running and ran for a special cause – "An Educated India".

It was 2nd October, Gandhi Jayanti, in the morning 7:00 am, when most of the Indorians were rubbing their eyes out of sleep, Core Business School students were on their toes by being part of Mega event - Indore Marathon, which was organized by IIM Indore to bring together people from all walks of life for a special social cause of spreading awareness of the importance of education in each and every individual. The run was in two sections – 11 Km run (Education Run) and 3 Km run (Dream Run). More than 70% of the CBS students (Core Leaders) took part in the marathon with great enthusiasm. It was students’ own interest and initiative taking leadership skill accumulated with desire to give the maximum that made this event a success for us. This was a great exposure to the students as well where we had a good blend of individuals from all across the city for the cause. We feel overwhelmed and happy after such a great success. Core Leaders Rock …!

Inter Collegiate Competition Winners

There was mixed participation from students of 1st as well as second year. The enthusiasm of winning as well as the gloom of failure has contributed towards their learning of handling situations which they would be facing in their day to day corporate life ahead.
